Making YouTube Videos

By the time this post will be online, I've already uploaded my second YouTube video, which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDkgx42gG-4.

In these past two weeks I've really been thinking a lot about my thought process in regards to social media and putting my art out there in general. I wanted to make YouTube videos for over 10 years, but it always felt like I have to be this amazing artist with huge knowledge about so many things that it was really overwhelming. I also thought I had to have certain (=expensive) equipment to do well and such, but in reality, most of the stuff that kept me back were non-issues. Yes, you need a decent camera and a mic (a good smartphone will have that), but that’s great to start with. What I’m trying to say is that I had a million reasons for not starting a channel sooner and I’m sure a lot artists out there might feel the same way.

Now that I’ve made that initial breakthrough, I’m began getting excited to learn all the new things that have to do with filming and editing, but for now I think getting used to doing art in front of a camera is more important than getting other things perfect. I’ve made a few attempts before and the results weren’t bad, but the whole setup was making the process uncomfortable for me and I had to find a way to make it

more comfortable, which took a couple of tries. That’s why I went for an angled viewpoint for the Draw With Me series – it’s a bit easier than overhead shots. It also works well for my workspace. In essence, this series is meant to be a practice series so that I get used to filming and editing. I want to keep the videos long since I myself often like to watch long videos to keep me company while I work.

My plan working in the Hahnemühle sketchbook on camera until it’s completed. I’ve had this sketchbook for a while and started working in it but I couldn’t find a proper “purpose” for it, if that makes any sense. I have a somewhat impulsive personality, which is also very apparent in how I choose my sketchbooks and notebooks (they get abandoned and picked up again often). So, the (out of the ordinary) grey-toned sketchbook was a question mark after testing out the paper. I’m happy I finally found a purpose for it.

About motifs for the sketchbook – I have some illustrations that I want to work on, some are my original character designs and some are fanart. Since I love books and video-games, especially anything that has to do with the fantasy genre, there will be Dovahkiins, fairies, assassins, thieves, elves and whatnot involved. I’m currently re-reading the first two books of Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson so characters from there might also make an appearance. I’m basically keeping all options open for this one.

I’ve an update from last week as well – I have started posting on my DeviantArt account, which I almost completely forgot about (it’s embarrassing, really), so there will be some activity there as well. I’ve liked DeviantArt since high school and it really stayed with me – I’m happy to see how the community got even more supportive over the years!

Next week’s video will be a bit different than the previous two because I decided for dry mediums without any watercolors and a much more sketch-like style drawing. It was really relaxing to not to have to worry about fine lines and just go for it. It’s very similar to a painting process despite using dry mediums.

I’ll see you in the next post. Have fun and draw on!
